Very useful post! This and the next one will be keepers. Actually, they all are.
We've never been inclined to vacation in cold weather. We avoid it even though there have been pleas from the children to go skiing, so your next post will help us find enticing places to go for our December vacation with them.
We're on Gran Canaria for a short get-to-know-you visit. It's surprisingly cooler than Madrid which is refreshing. This landscape on this island must resemble the moon. No vegetation and lots of rocks and mountains. Every now again along the coast some a beach comes into view. I would not call it pretty. But if you want to relax and hang out by beach and pool without seeing much "culture," this is a good place to be.
I'm eager to hear your experience on Tenerife. The geography is volcanic like here.
Thanks Andrea! And thanks for the eye-witness report from Gran Canaria! I’m sure we will confirm your observations when we are there next year. And as let me know if there is any specific place(s) you would like me to add to the next post!
What a great post! We have only been to one or two of these cities, but now can't wait to see them all and try them out! We are heading next to Plovdiv Bulgaria for August and September, so we will see what the weather and crowds are like!
I think you should have Perth, Western Australia on the list. We have a ‘Mediterranean’ climate, very different to eastern australia. Definitely a lot milder then Sydney in winter and our summers are hot but dry so not no humidity to stifle you in Summer.
This is so great, thank you for this breakdown! I too like the moderate temperatures and low crowds when planning travel, so this article is very handy.
Thanks for your comment, Jim. We find that if the weather and crowds don't suit us, even a wonderful place isn't for us. Timing is everything. And after travel to 60+ countries, we really enjoy the research to find our next location.
You’re after my own heart! We chase the sunshine too. As a Sydney local: just a little tweak: it is slightly subtropical here so we tend to get most of our rainfall in summer which is high season (Dec-Mar). May I recommend October and November for your 24C / 75F, low rainfall, shoulder season pleasure? Lots of beach days and everyone is pumped for summer and parties.
Blantyre, Malawi. and Harare, Zimbabwe should be on the list. Both are pleasant year around, partly because of the high altitude and partly because of the refreshing afternoon rains during the rainy season.
You are so right - we've loved both of those cities.... plus Lusaka, Zambia where we lived for a couple of years. They are definitely on our larger list - it was hard getting this down to just 25!
Hi! I’m Kelly - fellow traveler and slow-living enthusiast. I loved this post. We do the same but call it chasing the sun during shoulder season. Same goal - different targets and very specific times of year. We’re practical about budget too, so that magical 70s-and-empty vibe is our sweet spot.
You wrote: “Does high season always mean the best weather? No! There are lots of amazing places where perfect weather occurs during low and shoulder seasons. That means, you could get the best weather at the best prices.”
Yes, yes, yes.
Looking forward to your upcoming seasonal recs! I write about our slow travel journey if you want to drop by!:
Last summer we picked Porto for a vacation based on similar reasoning. Being Europeans, we’re well used to the idea of the Canaries/Madeira as having excellent year-round climate but wanted to find somewhere slightly closer.
Thanks Colin. We loved our visit to Porto last year! And it was very close to making the list - getting the list to 25 meant having to make some tough choices about what we included and what we left out. But Porto is awesome and we can't wait to go back!
We love Canada! But getting to a list of 25 cities around the world was tough. Which Canadian cities would you recommend for year-round mild temperatures?
Nairobi was our home for 3.5 years - absolutley loved it! And San Miguel has been our home for the last 4 summers - I’ve never loved a rainy season more!
What wonderful research you guys do. And very interesting, too. And, of course--Practical ):
Love that you compiled this list.
Thank you so much! This one was particularly fun to put together!
It seems like it would be! Especially with added value for you two perfect temp seekers.

Keep up the amazing posts, they are ao helpful 😊🤗
Thank you amiga! I can't wait to hear about your Bulgarian adventures!
You just posted a list of the only places I will retire…. Thanks!
Hi from Australia.
I think you should have Perth, Western Australia on the list. We have a ‘Mediterranean’ climate, very different to eastern australia. Definitely a lot milder then Sydney in winter and our summers are hot but dry so not no humidity to stifle you in Summer.
Thanks Nish! It was hard to narrow down the list - we’ll put Perth on bigger our master list!
This is so great, thank you for this breakdown! I too like the moderate temperatures and low crowds when planning travel, so this article is very handy.
Thanks Yvette! I hope this info is helpful as you plan your own adventures!
Your humble opinion is quite correct…although it looks like you’ve been over thinking/over planning/over studying…again.
Shift your gears. Slow your roll. Think like you travel. It takes planning, yes. But don’t overdo. You’ve got enough to roadmap a lifetime here!

Thanks for your feedback, Brodee! Nothing compares to an eye-witness account of a place! I'll be sure to note your recommendation.

Let’s keep swapping notes…
Thanks Kelly! We're happy to find fellow travelers with the same criteria!

Nothing in Canada? I'm shocked. We have many wonderfully interesting temperate places to visit. Cities and country. 😏

Ohhhh glad both my beloved Nairobi and San Miguel de Allende made the list!!
Nairobi was our home for 3.5 years - absolutley loved it! And San Miguel has been our home for the last 4 summers - I’ve never loved a rainy season more!
I’m I hope we cross paths with n San Miguel at some stage!!!
This is so great!
Thank you!
Not surprised to see Mexico City on your list! The weather is a big draw.
It’s really the best in our book!
Just my opinion but the pollution in Mexico City negates the weather
Only some of the year. During the summer rainy season, the air is pretty clear and clean.
Great list and I'm a total Goldilocks as well!
